Am i to old for patterned tights ?

I've never got the hang of bare legs in winter.
It's still a big thing in fashion circles, where the stylish will gladly freeze in order to look chic.
I love the warmth and corset-like security that comes with stretching on a pair of tights, so, in theory, I should be happy that there are a lot of options for what the Americans quaintly call 'hose' this autumn and winter.

Agyness Deyn
Sarah Harding

Style challenge: Anyone old enough to remember patterned tights on City girls in the early Nineties, unlike Agyness Deyn, left, or Sarah Harding, should steer clear
However, the majority of them are patterned, be it with lace, embroidery, paisley, houndstooth checks, even broad lamé stripes.
And I know better than to try this look at home.
'Strictly for the TV presenter Alexa Chung,' says Eilidh MacAskill, editor of In Style magazine, and fellow 35-plus mother of two.
'Because patterned tights are so retro and so potentially ageing, they can only be worn ironically.'

Peaches Geldof
Fearne Cotton

Don't try this at home: Patterned tights can be ageing, unless you are Peaches Geldof, left, or Fearne Cotton
Frankly, they are a style challenge for anyone old enough to remember them on City girls in the early Nineties.
Another friend our age agrees: 'I think they should be banned. 'I can't believe I used to wear them.
They do funny things to even the skinniest ankles.' Strangely, everyone agrees on the exception to the rule - it seems that fishnets look right at any age.
And if courage, or your ankles, fail you, then do as I will: rest easy in the knowledge that the simple black opaque is still very much out there.

Asos spotted tights.

Asos top
Asos skirt
Asos tights
Vintage shoes
Unearthen necklace

While browsing Chictopia i came across Samantha's outfit and it really stands out with these spotted tights. Whats more  there currently on sale at ASOS and available in purple ! You can see more of Samatha's outfits here at Chictopia:  Earthgirlsareez

Where did you get the tights and for how much ?
Asos.com $13 (on sale now for $5!)

Are they comfy, would you by again ?
Yes! i actually bought two pairs because i liked them so much and i happen to get lots of runs in my tights since my dog always jumps on me.

How did you get your inspiration for this outfit ?
I've been wanting to wear this skirt for awhile since it's so beautiful and has amazing details. the challenge was dressing it down so it would be work-appropriate.

Was the outfit built around the tights or vice versa ?
Actually the tights were the last addition! i chose a loose fitting cotton top to make it casual and then the tights to add some fun.

Did people comment about your tights, what reaction did you get wearing them ?
I didn't get many comments. just a lot of stares!

Would you consider them statement tights and is that why you brought them ?
I hadn't thought of how to categorize them. i have so many different tights in different colors with fun patterns so it's become part of my daily wardrobe.

Favourite hosiery shops ?
My favorite brands for hosiery are emilio cavallini, pretty polly, betsey johnson, tabio, topshop, asos

How to Wear Pattern Tights

When in doubt, wear pattern tights with a simple dress or skirt and let the tights be the focal point of the outfit. However, if you want to wear pattern tights with another pattern, follow the rules below.

1. One pattern should be bigger, or more dominant, than the other pattern.
2. One pattern should be geometric, such as stripes, dots, diamonds, triangles and so on, while the other pattern should be something that's moving - the two patterns should be opposites, but still complement one another.

Sheer black nylons are dated. The best option is to choose a sheer nylon with a little detail on it - stars up the back on the leg, (which is what is shown in this video), a pattern up the side, baby fishnets, (which look sheer from far away), or even sheer nylons with small dots would be a fabulous option.

Tips and Tricks for Wearing Patterned Tights or Leggings

  • For the most flattering look, it’s often best to choose patterns with small graphics such as tiny polka dots or little flowers. They’ll keep your gams looking slender.
  • Be wary of horizontal stripes – they tend to be a bit harder to pull off.
  • Patterned tights or leggings are interesting enough as is, so remember to keep the rest of your outfit simple.
  • Graphic tights or leggings look great tucked into boots. Try them with pumps, too, if you’re daring!
  • If you’re self conscious about your legs, try letting patterned tights peek out just between your boots and a skirt. The little sliver of skin will look super sexy without being over-the-top!
