DIY Chanel tights

Many of us have seen the double-sided Chanel tights. We've wanted them. The Fashion Spot has even had a thread dedicated to them. Of course, at $140 a pop, many will not get them.
Sure, I could wait for a knock-off (dropping in 3... 2... 1...), but knowing my impatience, I had to try my hand at making my own pair. Of course, given my lack of preparation and mismatching materials, the end result was quite sloppy and pretty much looked like a bad counterfeit. Therefore, I hereby dub this DIY: "The 'Channel' tights".
I didn't want to spend money on tights that I was pretty sure I'd ruin the first time around, so I rooted around the house and dug up these two disposable pairs:

Herein lied the most obvious problem. While the sheer nude tights were extremely tight and stretchy, the black ones were crochet, and completely stretched out so they were all big and loose.

Here, I've cut both tights along the sides. The only tricky part of this experiment was figuring out how to sew extremely stretchy fabrics together. In order to do so, you have to use astretch needle, and set the sewing machine on a zig-zag stitch, with a mid-sized stitch length, and the lowest tension setting. This is all pretty intuitive though.

Laying the tights on top of one another... starting to stitch the two fabrics together. In order to prevent slippage of the fabrics, I simply used binder clips to hold them together while I sewed. Elementary, yet effective!

Here I am pulling them on before sewing the foot shut... and final product (sorta).
Overall, since the textures of the tights were so different, the line of the stitch got all puckery, and ended up looking very sloppy. But since I did, indeed, figure out how to sew tights together effectively, I'd say the DIY was a sloppy success.

Aaaand here's what they look like! Paired with "matching" skirt and generic outfit, of course. You can obviously tell the stitch is kinda gross.
At any rate, this was just a test pair (or, as my sister says, a "rough draft"). Next time, I'm probably gonna buy two pairs of the same tights, to eliminate the texture problem. I'm lookin' at you, Urban Outfitters 2 for $20 tights deal.
Well, and I would post this to tFS, but seeing as I don't have an account... *cough* (just kidding... maybe....)

These tights promise to keep you cool in the heat. Too good to be true?

Hot weather and work attire just don't seem to mix. Closeted in offices, with windows that don't open and air conditioning that doesn't work, we try desperately to straddle that line between what's comfortable and what's professionally acceptable.
Strappy vests, flip-flops and micro-minis just don't cut it. But while a linen suit looks good at 8am, by lunchtime it's telling the world you don't own an iron and keep your clothes screwed up in little balls under your bed.
However, for us ladies, the killer is the huge expanse of flesh that is our legs.
Opting for a skirt means deciding whether the lesser of two huge evils is conservatively covering up with a pair of tights and risking certain heat exhaustion, or daring to bare a pair of pins that are inevitably either milk-bottle pale, or inexpertly streaked with fake tan?
(And no, however appealing it might sound, the half-and-half approach of stockings is not a good idea, due to the strange meteorological fact that dictates that a woman wearing stockings always attracts a micro-climate of ill-timed gusts of wind.)

tights

Bare Cooling range from Marks & Spencer, from £4, styles include Oil Look, Toeless, Grip Sole, Matt and Hold-Ups
Fortunately, technology has come to our aid in the form of the M&S Bare Tights range - with 'cooling finish'. The idea is that they're super-thin, super-strong tights that apparently 'make you feel and look as though you're not wearing any tights at all!' (The exclamation mark is theirs, not mine.) But thereal selling point is a special finish that 'releases little "cooling bubbles" as you move'.
Yes, I'm intrigued, and have visions of wandering around leaving a vapour trail of dry ice in my wake, like an Eighties pop video brought to life.

Or maybe it'll be more like swathing my legs in a very delicate form of bubble wrap that pops, showering my body in iced water. It's neither, of course. When I get the tights, they look like, well, tights.
Very thin tights - apparently, they have a sevendenier appearance but a 15- denier strength; but tights nonetheless. And, disappointingly, close inspection doesn't reveal any visible bubbles, although I will concede that they feel cool to the touch. I have to say the colour looks a bit odd.
It's like they've tried so hard to avoid that overlybronzed American Tan shadethat they've gone too far the other way. The idea is that they're 'Nude', and maybe for the average Brit in winter they are.
But straight out the packet, against skin that's had a glimpse of sunlight, they look decidedly anaemic - a strange sort of neutral shade that would cost hundreds were you to buy the paint version in Farrow & Ball, but is probably best described as chickpea meets mushroom. To be fair, once on, they lose their insipid hue and do look a bit more natural.
To the casual observer, from a distance, I might look bare-legged; although close up you'd either realise the truth or think I had very strange skin.
Looks aside, did they feel cool? Well yes, weirdly, they did. As I was putting them on, they felt cold, as if they'd been left in the fridge for a few minutes before I slipped into them. But it was while they were on that the cooling properties really started to make themselves felt. It's a very strange sensation.
If you've ever accidentally sat on your leg for too long, so it hasn't quite got to the pins and needles stage but still feels unexpectedly cold when you stop, you'll have a vague idea what's in store. It's not exactly an Arctic wind breezing across your flesh, but it's the sort of chill that menthol leaves on the skin. I'm not claiming that if you sat in the sun with these on you wouldn't feel the heat, but they certainly seem to work to some extent.
According to the science bit, each pair of tights incorporates millions of microcapsules that contain these cooling agents. Throughout the day, these are gradually broken down and released onto the skin.
The blurb reckons that friction and movement encourage these micro-capsules to break down, so I experiment, running my hands up and down my legs. It seems to work. Where my hands were, there's a slight trace of chill, almost as if I'd been stroked by a ghost. (Well, I imagine that's how it would feel, as I can't say that's ever actually happened to me.)
Anyway, other people in the office start giving me slightly strange looks, so I stop caressing my limbs and restrict myself to crossing and uncrossing my legs under my desk, which seems to have the same effect. As the day goes on, I forget I'm wearing the magic tights, and it's only when I get up from my desk that I get a gentle chilling reminder of their presence.
However, by the time I'm leaving the office for home, I've begun to wonder if they've lost their powers, as I'm not feeling their force quite as strongly. But I think I have just got used to them, because when I take them off that evening, they still feel cool to the touch.
M&S reckon that the tights will retain their cooling potential for up to ten washes, but that they are at their strongest for the first three. Given that I count it as a bonus if I get more than one wear out of a pair of tights without snagging or laddering them, I'm not too concerned by this.
So, cooling tights, the best thing since sliced bread? The greatest new technology since the wheel?
Well, no, let's be honest, they're not exactly providing the solution to famines and fevers, but they make a hot day in the office an awful lot more chilled out.

Bare legs vs tights

Should a girl go bare-legged or encase her pins in nylon? This is one of fashion’s all-time, raging debates and is never more relevant than during a time of seasonal transition. Personally, I would love to go bare-legged but there are a number of obstacles stopping me.
1. An unsightly matrix of blue spider veins and blindingly white skin
2. Worrying about being cold if the sun goes in later or flashing passers-by in an unexpected gust of wind
3. Shoes pinching, rubbing or getting smelly when worn on bare feet.

Now, the first problem could be resolved with expertly applied self-tan, but I haven’t always got the time for that and a streaky, botched tanning job provides another reason to keep legs well and truly covered up. So if like me, you’re less than fond of your naked legs and don’t have the constitution of a tough Northern British lass then tights are probably the best option to carry you through to summer. Just steer well clear of ghastly, dated sheer tights (especially the shiny ones) and opt for opaque. Alternatively, wear stockings, which will allow the air to circulate round your middle.
But there are times when wearing black tights with a spring dress just looks wrong. Thankfully, the trend for brightly coloured tights as first seen in the 1960s and then again in the 80’s is back. Tights are now available in all shades of the rainbow from the likes of Pretty Polly, American Apparel and Jonathan Aston and provide the perfect way of injecting a summery splash of colour into your outfit without the aforementioned risks associated with bare legs. You could play it safe and team them with a black dress and shoes or mix it up with a contrasting or print dress like this look at Erin Featherstone. Another interesting trend which I’m undecided about, because it’s frankly bizarre, is two tones tights as seen at Chanel and copied by Asos.com.

But if you still crave the bare leg look but aren’t ready to bare all then there is a solution. Several manufacturers, including Mytights.com and Italian brand Oroblu, produce ultra sheer tights that camouflage imperfections and even out skin tone while giving the appearance of bare legs. No one will ever guess you’re wearing them but you.
However, when summer arrives and temperatures soar, then bare legs are the only way to go. The best way in my opinion of solving problem number one is to gradually layer up colour with a moisturiser that contains a hint of self tan or get an airbrushed look withSally Hansen Airbrush Legs. Wearing shorts or a tulip dress that is slightly elasticised around the bottom will avoid those Marilyn Monroe moments to which I am particularly prone. As far as the third problem is concerned there are two options. You could either prevent rubbing and chafing by carefully applying invisible gel strips and pads like those available from Scholl and banish unpleasant whiffs with a foot-refreshing spray or if you’re feeling exceptionally brave, follow Chloe Sevigny and wear socks and sandals.

Laddered Tights

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

How do you get your inspiration for the outfits you wear ?
I've always been a big fan of magazines ever since I can remember. I'll read any magazine and I guess just seeing people in those magazines and what they are wearing gives me ideas of what clothes I want to wear.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Who has had the biggest fashon influence on your outfits ?
I don't think there's a certain celebrity or person who's look I copy or want to look like but I like people like Kate Moss, Jameela Jamil and Fearne Cotton. I like the edgy look but still keeping it quite girly and fun!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What blogs and websites do you follow and why ?
I really like Fashion Looks North (http://fashionlooksnorth.blogspot.com/) I'm a Northern girl myself so I agree that we have a lot better style ;) haha
My friend Rachel runs Polkadot Stripes and she's lovely also. (http://polkadotstripes.wordpress.com/) I really like this blog too. She takes some lovely photos. The Fall - http://cull-candy.blogspot.com/

Would you describe yourself as a trendsetter or fashion follower ?
Wow, umm... I am nowhere near socially high enough or cool enough to be a trendsetter! :') I like to keep up with the latest trends and I guess I do follow fashion. I do wear the same kind of things that most girls my ages seem to, but I do like to look a little bit different to everybody else in a way.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

How would you describe your style ?
I am very much quite a girly girl, so my wardrobe is definitely very feminine but I'd also say there's quite an edgy/cute twist on it as well.

Does the hosiery you wear dictate the clothes, outfit you wear ?
I guess sometimes, yeah. Like, if I'm wearing all black and white I will usually wear my floral tights to stand out a bit more and add some colour to the outfit and make it seem more fun. And I like my black and white two toned tights to make the outfit seem a bit more "kooky" and different too.

What is in your hosiery drawer or closet ?
Off the top of my head I have: 2 pairs of floral tights, 1 pair of black and white florals, heart print, dotted tights, black and white two tones, white tights, zig zag prints, purple tights and normal plain black ones. Oh, I have some really bright orange ones which I got for a fancy dress party but I've never worn them since :')

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Where do you shop for hosiery ?
Start off in places like Primark - they have some nice designs and they're rather cheap so that's a plus. All my floral ones are from Primark and they're just £4!
Topshop tights are brilliant but they are a little more expensive.
New Look and Dorothy Perkins have some lovely ones too.

What was the last item of hosiery you brought, how much you spent etc ?
I bought my black and white floral tights just yesterday actually. £4, Primark. I can't wait to put an outfit together to wear them out somewhere!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

How does wearing tights make you feel emotionally ? More feminine, better with girly outfits not thought about it ?
I guess I do feel sort of naked if I'm not wearing tights. I'm not really a fan of going bare legged anywhere, even though I do like my legs and showing them off a bit, I just rather show them off in some tights! If my outfit means I need to be bare legged, I'll usually wear nude tights.

When do you wear hosiery,daily-once a week etc ?
Usually most days. I used to live in jeans but now I never wear them. I always wear skirts and dresses.

What is your hosiery staple ?
Well, my favourite pairs are my colourful florals and my heart print ones.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What are your style tips for wearing tights ?
Just be brave! There's so many crazy designs out there and people feel like they can't wear them because of what other people will say. I cannot even being to tell you how many funny looks and comments I get when I go to the supermarket in floral tights! But I couldn't care less, because I like them and I know they look good.

How do you put on tights?
haha, what a question! I suppose the best way is to sort of roll each leg up to the toe, get you foot in and then unroll all the way up!
However, I usually end up hopping all over my bedroom :')

The best and worst things about hosiery, Love-hate ?
Best thing: umm, there's just so much variety and they can just make an instant stand out statement and can just make an outfit.
Worst thing: definitely laddering! Once you see that little hole formed you know you're doomed! A top tip though... once you see a hole form, get some clear nail varnish and put it all around the hole. It prevent the ladder forming (further).
