Kate Middleton Designer Clothing Dress fetches $105,000 at auction

LONDON (Reuters) – A dress worn by Prince William's fiancée Kate Middleton at a university fashion show in 2002 which reportedly sparked the royal's interest in his bride-to-be fetched 65,000 pounds ($105,000) on Thursday.

 Including commission, the see-through mesh slip dress designed by Charlotte Todd sold for 78,000 pounds ($126,000). It had been expected to sell for 8,000-10,000 pounds.

Todd, who was in the saleroom at Kerry Taylor Auctions in London, said she planned to put the proceeds of the sale toward buying a house with her husband.

"I am totally speechless, and feel very emotional," she said. "I really didn't think it would make that amount. I am planning to put some of the money toward a deposit for a house, but perhaps I may use some to change my career."

Earlier, Todd had said: "If it is true that my design helped change the Prince's interest in Kate from platonic to romantic as has been reported, then I am pleased to have played a part -- however minor."

The dress went to a collector in Jersey, Channel Islands.

Middleton and William, who met at St. Andrews University in Scotland in 2001, are to marry in London's Westminster Abbey on April 29.

Among the other items sold on Thursday were two dresses worn by William's late mother Princess Diana -- a Zandra Rhodes pink chiffon dinner gown which sold for 30,000 pounds and a white formal lace evening gown which fetched 36,000 pounds.

A Louis Vuitton vanity case once belonging to U.S. socialite Wallis Simpson, the late wife of British King Edward VIII, went under the hammer for 48,000 pounds, several times its pre-sale estimate of 6-10,000 pounds.

Feting a Designer Clothes Fashion 'Sculptor'

Known for wild sculptural gowns and voluminous dresses of pleated silk, Italy's Roberto Capucci will soon be the latest fashion designer to get the major-museum treatment.

"Art Into Fashion," at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from March 16 to June 5, celebrates a designer who—though not a household name in America—was a major figure of the couture scene from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Mr. Capucci was well-positioned to dress the Italian elite: He sold his first design (at age 18, in the late 1940s) to Marcella de Marchis Rossellini, then the wife of famed film director Roberto Rossellini. Mr. Capucci made a splash at Italy's 1951 fashion show.

By 1962, Life Magazine was hailing Mr. Capucci as one of two rising couture stars—the other being Yves Saint Laurent.

With a reputation for spectacular innovation in shape, Mr. Capucci employed unusual materials, such as pebbles, raffia, plastic and even glow-in-the-dark beads. "His dresses became sculptures almost from the beginning," said curator Dilys Blum.

Mr. Capucci's dresses were worn by Gloria Swanson and Marilyn Monroe, but his work wasn't only for the famous. "As he focused more on fashion as art, he was primarily known for dressing aristocratic Italian ladies," said Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

The Philadelphia exhibit includes more than 80 works, notably Mr. Capucci's 1956 "Nove Gonne" ("Nine Skirts"), which pairs a simple bodice with nine overlapping layers of skirts in red silk taffeta. The seductive dress made an appearance in an advertisement for the 1957 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, featuring an elegant model posing in the Roman Forum.

Mr. Capucci's use of tiny, delicate pleating took shapes into fanciful territory: A gown of gold silk lamé suggests angel wings; another in red silk mimics the curves of hot flames.

When he returned to Italy in 1968 after a sojourn in Paris, he continued to emphasize artistic vision over commercial concerns. And in 1980, Mr. Capucci resigned from the rigors of the couture schedule entirely. "I was exasperated, I'd had enough of rules and calendars," he said in a 1996 exhibition catalog. "If a painter or sculptor hasn't finished, he doesn't show."

Mr. Capucci's focus shifted to fashion-as-sculpture, and the designs grew ever more spectacular; in 1995, he was invited to show at the Venice Biennale art show.

Today, the museum world continues its ever-closer embrace of fashion designer  clothes. Later this year, the Dallas Museum of Art will stage a retrospective for French couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier. A recent donation to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute will renovate the fashion galleries, allowing for more exhibitions.

Harry Potter Takes New York wearing Designer Clothing

For anyone that thinks that Harry Potter is getting to be old news, the excitement at the New York premiere on Thursday night, July 9, proves that he's one wizard that is still beloved by fans, even after all these years. It was the premiere of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth film in the series based on J. K. Rowling's phenomenally successful novels, and the screaming devotees and star-studded red carpet showed the world that Harry's appeal has not waned one bit.

Of course, the three main "Harry Potter" stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, were on hand to celebrate. The trio began the series as children in 2001 with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and like their characters in the films they have grown up over the past nine years. Now poised adults aged 19, 20, and 19, the three have spent most of their lives working on the epic story of Harry and his magical destiny.

When asked earlier in the day at a press conference about the end of the franchise, with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" coming in 2010, Emma Watson spoke for the group.

"I think we all feel as if Harry Potter is never really going to die. I think it's so big and so loved. We have a theme park coming out in 2010 and I think that kids are going to keep reading the books and new generations of the kids are going to keep watching the films and I don't really ever feel like it's going to really go away. I think it's got longevity," she said.

Other stars on hand for the film's premiere included Bonnie Wright, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Tom Felton, Warwick Davis and Freddie Stroma, as well as director David Yates.

If the celebrity fan turnout is any indication, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" will join its predecessors in raking in huge amounts of cash at the box office. Denis Leary, Diane Sawyer, Marcia Gay Harden, Ashanti, Lance Bass, Michelle Trachtenberg, Eric Mabius, Gina Gershon, and Vanessa Williams all came out to be among the first to see the latest thrilling installment in the battle between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.

And as for the final chapter in the series, Daniel Radcliffe spoke for the group when he admitted, "I'm so excited about the seventh film. Seeing the sixth film again, we are doing something very, very different in the last one. We're not at Hogwarts. The difference that makes is extraordinary."

Lanvin’s New Bad Boys Rule in Designer Clothing

If any collection best captured the current state of play in men’s fashion it was Lanvin, whose exhilarating show Sunday morning, June 28, in Paris was a real double whammy: The coolest collection of designer clothes in the most assuredly staged show.

Where previously Lanvin was all about the sensitive man, poetic figures whose clothes all looked designed for dinner parties where only Bordeaux vintages are served, for Spring 2010 Lanvin’s man's first destination will be a nightclub.

That much was clear from the pre-show ambience in the Salle Wagram - a Berlin techno track and bordello red lighting, where the start of the show was heralded by the volume brusquely turned way up.

Lanvin, the house that spawned the current obsession with wearing bowties - everyone from Lower East Side hipsters to Milanese dandies wear dickie bows these days – has suddenly walked away from the phenomena. They were absent from this show.

“It’s our anti-uniform collection and all about why not? Why not a nightclub? Why not iced coffee for breakfast," said Lanvin’s creative director Alber Elbaz with a laugh, who took his bow, as is customary, with menswear designer Lucas Ossendrijver.

Though not many men can afford Lanvin’s pricey menswear, its influence has been huge – just take a look this spring in the windows of Zara, the giant Spanish fashion retailer, crammed, as they are, with the muted hues, frayed hems and sensitive fabrics the Paris house made its signature.

They should get ready to re-do the shop front for Lanvin’s after midnight collection emphasis on faille rocker dandy redingotes and a great new trouser cut – in taupe, ivy and battered burgundy – cut forgivingly down the thigh and tapered at the ankle. But the best idea was a series of pants and suits in cool tartan or club tie stripe fabrics which will be de rigueur for all hipsters next Easter.

Added to the mix were some great footwear, either Hobbit-like chunky brogues or fabric strap sandals, worn at the strong ecru colored finale where calf leather bomber jackets, worn inside pants, Querelle style singlets and off-the-shoulder trenches starred.

The only thing missing was a backstage pass around their necks or an after-party invite in their hands for Europe’s two mega tours of the summer – Depeche Mode and U2.
